Gusev Crater and Meridiani Planum, two regions that show strong evidence
of past water activity on Mars, were selected by NASA as the landing
sites for the Mars Exploration Rovers based on the recommendations of a
large team of scientists and engineers who examined more than 100
locations for landing safety
and scientific interest. Spirit landed at Gusev Crater on Jan. 3,
2004 (EST). Opportunity landed at Meridiani Planum on Jan. 25, 2004
(EST). Click on the map below to learn more about the Gusev and
Meridiani landing sites. Yellow ellipses are designated for MER-A. Red
ellipses are for MER-B. The gray regions represent data returned from
the Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey orbiters.
